Why Do We Like to Dance Summary
This article dealt with topics covered within the Biology and Behaviour units. I learned that music stimulates areas such as the orbitofrontal cortex and the ventral striatum. Sometimes, depending on how much we enjoy hearing music, that determines the amount of activity these areas receive. The cerebellum as we learned during the course that deals with the coordination and timing on movements is also activated by music. It discuses mirror neurons found in the cortex which is activated upon watching or carrying out some sort of motor related movement. However, music and dance are seen as components that are used as activators for the mirror neurons as well as within larger sensory and motor circuits, making someone want to dance or when observing it because these areas in the brain activate involuntarily. This article relates to Unit 2, Lecture 2, where it is stated that the cerebellum is linked with movement: muscle tone & posture and motor skills which are the primary aspect within dance.
